Gold filled jewelry has a thick layer of gold coated around a base metal. This layer is about 15x thicker than gold plated jewelry, and won't wear off over time, making it last much longer. It's safe to get gold filled jewelry wet while showering or exercising. Gold fill is indistinguishable from solid gold but costs significantly less because of its base metal core.
